BLUE SKY DAYS
An exhibition of work produced by local families working with artists
Mia Fernandes and Jane Barnes.
This August, one hundred and thirty local children and parents took part in art workshops in the gallery on the theme "Blue Sky Days". The workshops where a partnership between Cafe Gallery Projects, Sure Start Rotherhithe, Sure Start Central Bermondsey, Southwark Adult Education and the Southwark Alliance. We would like to thank everyone that took part and contributed financially to this project.
CIRCLE OF MEMORIES
As part of DIY
Artist Mia Fernandes led eight workshops with over forty local families. Very young children made large clay pots which where planted with small trees. Other children hand-painted wallpaper making images on the theme of the forest. The results are displayed in the Salter Space as a woodland glade. DIY is funded by North Southwark Environment Trust, the Peter Minet Trust, St Olave's and St Savior's Grammar School Foundation and the Newcommen Collett Foundation.
ARTS AND HEALTH PROGRAMME
The Dividing Line
In May 2005, a small group of practitioners working in the field of palliative care met at Cafe Gallery Projects London for the first time. They came together to view a contemporary art exhibition ‘It’s Inside’ by artists Katherine Meynell & Alistair Skinner and to take part in a participatory event ‘The Dividing Line‘ which was led by artist Helen Marshall. What followed exceeded the expectations of both participants and organisers.
Using video, objects and text participants made their own visual and textual responses to the exhibition. In short, they created artworks that became part of the exhibition for a day. Participants found they were able to reflect and share their practice in a way that was new and invigorating. Some also expressed an increased insight into the feelings of the patient and client. At the end of the day helium balloons with written text were released in Southwark Park, at the heart of which is Cafe Gallery Projects London.
